Diverse Services for Diverse Needs

All of our therapeutic services are based on the principles of Applied Behavior
Analysis (ABA)

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

The purpose of Behavioral intervention is to assist individuals with Autism and related disorders to build the core skills needed. As they build their skill set, more complex ones are targeted with the goal of bridging the gap between their skill set and what is appropriate for their age. In the meantime, behaviors that may interfere with learning are addressed and more appropriate replacement behaviors are taught.

Parent participation and follow through in the program is highly important and greatly impacts not only the progress of the services, but also the possibility of generalizing the progress to natural environments.

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)

The groundwork for any sound intervention program is created by a detailed and accurate assessment. The clinicians at CDD utilize a variety of assessment tools depending on the age and the needs of the individual. Based on these tools, the assessor can form a function-based behavioral intervention plan that is tailored to each person’s unique needs.

Adaptive Skills Training (AST)

The Adaptive Skills Training program focuses on teaching individuals life skills that assist them towards a greater level of independence at home and in the community.

Specific areas of functional skills that the program targets are self-help skills, personal hygiene, communication, safety awareness, community integration, as well as socialization and play skills.

An initial assessment evaluates the unique needs of the individual and guides the development of a program suitable for the person. Parent education and involvement are essential components of the program.

Psycho-Sexual Education and Preparation (PEP)

The goal of the PEP program is to provide individuals with special needs the education, support, and guidance they need on topics related to puberty, sexual behavior, romantic relationships, socially appropriate behavior, etc.

The program is initiated by an assessment to evaluate the above areas for an individual, while taking into consideration family, cultural, religious, and social values as appropriate to the situation.

Early Signs

What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction, communication, and by restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide variation of challenges and strengths seen in individuals. The first signs typically appear during the first three years of life. Autism is now believed to be caused by a combination of different genetic and environmental factors. It is heavily recommended for caregivers who notice concerns, to seek evaluation without delay, as early intervention can improve outcomes.

Possible signs of autism in babies and toddlers:

  • By 6 months, no social smiles or other warm, joyful expressions directed at people
  • By 6 months, limited or no eye contact
  • By 9 months, no sharing of vocal sounds, smiles or other nonverbal communication

  • By 12 months, no response to name when called
  • By 16 months, no words
  • By 24 months, no meaningful, two-word phrases
  • Any loss of any previously acquired speech, babbling or social skills

Possible signs of autism at any age:

  • Avoids eye contact and prefers to be alone
  • Flat affect and/or struggles with understanding other people’s feelings
  • Lack of or delay in spoken language
  • Repeats words or phrases over and over (echolalia)
  • Gets upset by minor changes in routine or surroundings
  • Has highly restricted interests
  • Performs repetitive motor actions such as hand-flapping, rocking or spinning
  • Has unusual and often intense reactions to sounds, smells, tastes, textures, lights and/or colors
