Early Signs
What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder of variable severity that is characterized by difficulty in social interaction, communication, and by restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide variation of challenges and strengths seen in individuals. The first signs typically appear during the first three years of life. Autism is now believed to be caused by a combination of different genetic and environmental factors. It is heavily recommended for caregivers who notice concerns, to seek evaluation without delay, as early intervention can improve outcomes.

- By 12 months, no response to name when called
- By 16 months, no words
- By 24 months, no meaningful, two-word phrases
- Any loss of any previously acquired speech, babbling or social skills

- Flat affect and/or struggles with understanding other people’s feelings
- Lack of or delay in spoken language
- Repeats words or phrases over and over (echolalia)

- Has highly restricted interests
